Turning 30? I was too busy chasing career goals to notice. Forty? I was in law school - ambitious, determined, and running on caffeine (or wine, probably wine). Fifty? I had work to do, friends to see, life to live. Sixty? No big deal. I laughed it off and kept going. Even Sixty-Five? I was retired, learning photography and travelling with my sweetie.
But seventy? Oh… seventy landed differently.
It’s not the number, exactly. It’s that my body and my brain seem to have joined forces in a quiet rebellion. My once-perky energy? Now it sometimes needs a nap. My skin? Let’s just say gravity is having the time of its life. My memory? Occasionally takes a coffee break without telling me.
I still go to yoga, but getting up off the floor after playing with the cats can now qualify as a workout. And some mornings, I’m convinced my bones hold a meeting before I get out of bed to discuss whether they’re in the mood to cooperate.
It’s humbling. And a little unnerving. Every time we plan a new trip, Colin asks me if I'm ready to deal with the climbing in and out of zodiacs or finding my way from a foreign airport when I'm alone...wtf??
But it’s also teaching me something:
Seventy is the age where you stop pretending you're invincible - and start appreciating that you're still here!
With my friend, Cindy
It’s where laughter matters more than looks. Where the joy of a good stretch outweighs the number on the scale. Where your cats don’t care if you groan a little getting up off the floor — they’re just happy you’re there (not really, but you get the drift).
So yes, seventy has hit me hard. But it’s also reminded me: I’m still living. I’m still learning. And I’ve still got a lot of sass left in me — sagging or not.
